Your Debts are Discharged

After the 341 meeting, your trustee will take care of selling off all your non-exempt assets as a form of payment to your creditors. All your creditors should have filed their claims with the court by this time. You are then discharged of your debts, which doesn’t count towards student loans, and your debts are now gone.

Political parties walk a very fine balance and often err on one side or the other on specific issues. Conservatives tend to be too conservative and unrealistic about abortion and other such issues. On the other hand, democrats tend to be too interested in exporting democracy to all parts of the world irrespective of whether conditions are ripe or not.

A smart leader would be one who reconciles these issues as far as possible by taking everybody along. One must assess political parties through the same pragmatic and practical medium. Adopting too ideological stance may work well for an individual living in a house. However, this may not work well when one has to manage a country.

Different countries in the world have a different political setup insofar as the number of parties in the democracy is concerned. Mature democracies like United States and United Kingdom follow a two party set up. Of course, there is nothing official or formal about the limit.

The Supreme Court is made up of one chief justice judge and the other judges (at the moment eight) are considered associated justices. There are currently nine judges and they are voted into the Supreme Court for life.

Who gets a Vote?

When cases are presented before the Supreme Court all justices regardless if they are the chief justice or associate justice gets to vote on the outcome of the case.

How Does One Get Appointed to the Supreme Court?

The President of the United States will nominate a candidate for the position. The decision is then reviewed by the Senate. The Senate will review the nominee and interview them. They will then approve or deny the decision to appoint the judge as a Supreme Court judge.

Citizenship. Article two of the Constitution requires that the president must be a natural born citizen. However, the term natural born has been under much debate. Some people believe that natural born requires that the person must be born on United States soil, while others believe that natural born can be the child of two American citizens who are overseas. This issue will be a target of much debate for years to come.

Age Restriction. Article two of the Constitution requires that you must be 35 years old to run for President. You cannot turn 35 during your campaign trail. You have to be 35 when you submit your papers for candidacy.

Residency Requirement. There is a residency requirement to be the President of the United States. You must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years. A residence is an established physical address in the United States. The 14 years do not have to be consecutive, as long as it is 14 years you can run for president.

Term Limits. Before the 22^nd amendment to the Constitution a person could run for president as many times as they wished. However, that was changed with the addition of the 22^nd amendment. This states that anyone who has served six years as president cannot run for president again. This comes out to each president can serve two, four year terms of office.

Create an Organization for Funds. If you wish to run for president you will need a lot of money to run. While you could use your personal funds you can also accept donations. In order to accept donations you must register with the Federal Election Commission. This commission is in charge of keep track of donations and making sure that everyone follows the rules in regards to funds and donations. However, creating an organization with the Federal Election Commission is essential to get donations.

Collect Money. You must have at least $5,000 of expenses and campaign funds in order to be considered a candidate for president. These funds can come from personal expenses or donations.

Fill Out Statement of Candidacy. After you have reached the $5,000 limit you must fill out a form called a Statement of Candidacy. It is a nine line form that will officially make you a candidate for the seat of president of the United States of America.

Hit the Campaign Trail. Once your statement of candidacy is submitted you are officially a candidate of for president and can start campaigning. It is important to do this immediately so that you can get your name out there and start to collect supporters.

The process for running for President of the United States of America isn’t difficult and can easily be achieved within a matter of hours. As long as you have $5,000 and the official form you can officially run for President if you’d like.

Gathering Voters. The most important part of the canvassing effort is to gather new voters. Almost all political candidates will carry around voter registration cards so that those that might be interested in voting can sign up. Every votes counts and the candidates do not want to miss out on getting a vote because the person is not registered to vote.

Learning About the Issues. A candidate cannot address the public’s concern if they are out of touch with the public. Canvassing is a great way for the candidate to learn what is bothering the public and what issues need to be addressed. By speaking with the public and allowing them to voice their concerns, candidates are able to tailor their campaign to the area they are running in.

Gathering Information. Canvassing allows candidates to see where they sit with the local public. Many canvassing events require volunteers asking questions on a survey to the local public about the candidate. With this information people are able to see where the candidate really stands in the public’s opinion and what may need to be changed.

Raise Campaign Funds. Canvassing is also a great way to raise campaign funds. While the candidate is out speaking to the public they can form relationships that will potentially bring in campaign funds. If the public knows and supports a candidate they are more likely to fund the campaign than if they do not know about the candidate. A political campaign is expensive to fund and this is a great way to raise a bit of extra money.

Phone Canvassing. Phone canvassing is a quick way to canvass the local population. It involves large groups of volunteers sitting and making several phone calls to those in the area and asking if they would like to speak to them about the issues surrounding the campaign. While phone canvassing is still popular it is being phased out due to the unreliability of people wanting to participate.

Door to Door Canvassing. Door to door canvassing involves volunteers and the actual candidate going door to door to speak with the public. Door to door canvassing is believed to be the most personal way to talk to the local people and is a great way for candidates to get to know their general public. However, door to door canvassing is very limited due to this very personal nature.

Email Canvassing. Email canvassing is becoming more and more popular as technology takes over. Email canvassing involves sending emails to local groups and email lists. It allows people to participate on their own time. The anonymity of email surveys allows the public to speak openly with the candidate regarding the issues that mean the most to them. The drawback to email canvassing is that there is no way to gain email address unless the person specifically gives it to the campaign.

Join a Political Party. If you notice that your political beliefs are very similar to that of a political party you should join a political party. Most people who join will be invited to political campaigns and campaigning events. It’s a great way to get involved with local and national politics.

Write to State Representatives. If you wish to be involved with a political campaign on the state level you can write to your state representative’s office and ask how to get involved. Many state representatives will have the information to guide you to a political campaign group that will accept volunteers.

Contact Local Representatives. If you are looking for local political campaigns you can contact your local representatives. Many representatives set up separate email accounts or hot lines that allow people who are looking to volunteer to call up and inquire about it. If you do not have any of the local information you can always ask around as many people might be involved or able to help you out.

Join a Voters Group. If you do not want to join a political party you can join a local voters group. These are groups of individuals who work at the common goal of voting in elections. By joining this type of group you will have access to local political campaigns that are looking for volunteers.

With that in mind, I recently started planning a trip to Canada as I had never been there before.  One of the first places I visited online for research was Canada 411 where I could find maps, websites, phone numbers and addresses to some famous political landmarks.  I also found some restaurants for the trip also.  The site was great and helped me plan out most of my trip.  So in a few weeks, I will once again take off to visit another country’s famous political landmarks and locations while my friends at home laugh at my ventures.  When I finally get around to writing my book about my travels and make a lot of money, we will see who is laughing then.

Voters are looking to Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee to run in the 2012 election. Sarah Palin is possibly the most well-known of these candidates; her run for vice president alongside John McCain put her in the public eye. She has strong beliefs that sometimes run contrary to those of others in the Republican Party, but she also has a solid base of supporters.

Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is another viable option for the 2012 election. He ran against John McCain in the 2008 election, but eventually came to support John McCain as the Republican presidential candidate. Romney founded a political action committee called Free and Strong America PAC. The purpose of the committee was to further the cause of Republican candidates and support them in their campaigning.

Mike Huckabee is a well-known Republican politician. He was the governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007 and now hosts a talk show called Huckabee. Like Romney, he was a candidate in the 2008 presidential primaries. He left the race early in 2008 as McCain became the obvious Republican choice. When asked about the possibility of running for president in 2012, Huckabee said he would be active in the 2012 election. However, he also said it may be as a candidate or as a supporter of another Republican candidate.

As America enters the second half of Obamas presidency, its essential to start looking at possible candidates for 2012 and start preparing for another election.

Some of the new possibilities include Alvin Greene, Jimmy McMillan, and Mike Gravel. Alvin Greene ran for the United States senator position in South Carolina, but lost to the Republican incumbent. As the first African-American candidate to be nominated by a party for the U.S. Senate, he is considered fairly progressive. Rumors say that he is considering a presidential run in 2012; however, a recent scandal may keep him from getting very far. In late 2010, he was charged with showing pornography to a college student.

Jimmy McMillan is another unusual candidate. He’s run for office six times in the past seventeen years, although he’s never held office. McMillan is a Vietnam veteran, which may endear him to patriotic and older voters. He holds liberal views on gay marriage and other social issues, although his views on the environmental problems the country faces are unclear. McMillan has said that a 2012 presidential election may be in his future.

A previous Alaskan senator, Mike Gravel has the most political experience of the three possible Democratic candidates. Like McMillan, he is a veteran of the United States military. Hes known for trying to eradicate the draft during the Vietnam War. Although he once claimed that his political career was over, he later said that he was considering trying to win the Democratic nomination in the 2012 election.

All of these candidates vary greatly from the current Democratic president, and it will be interesting to see how the Democratic party votes in 2012.

First, there is the argument that no one knows when life begins. Until approximately 24 weeks into a pregnancy, the fetus typically cannot survive outside the womb. Until that point, abortion supporters claim, the fetus is simply an extension of the mother and is not its own person with rights. In a case like that, the rights of the woman trump the rights of the embryo or fetus. For that reason, some supporters want to keep abortion legal throughout the entirety of pregnancy, while others think it should only be legal until a fetus can survive on its own.

Second, pro-choice supporters say that making abortion illegal may force many unprepared women into motherhood. An increase in unwanted babies could lead to a higher infant mortality rate due to infanticide, neglect, or abuse. They claim it is unfair for a child to come into the world unwanted, and that abortion may save children from a mediocre life.

Another point that pro-choice supporters make is that illegal abortions were very common before abortion became legal. Usually done in dirty, unsafe conditions, abortions were carried out by people who did not know what they were doing or what to do if something went wrong. Many women lost their lives due to these abortions, and it may be that making abortion illegal would start a return to these unsafe practices.

Such a heated debate will not be settled anytime soon; however, if both sides familiarize themselves with the others views, it is possible to become more understanding and tolerant of both sides.

Stem cell research, a form of research used in treating various diseases, has a big controversy surrounding it. It’s been an issue for several decades now, and there are strong arguments on both sides of the debate. Proponents of stem cell research want to use this research to cure and understand painful, life-threatening illnesses. They have a few very strong arguments.

As technology progresses, stem cell research will undoubtedly become an even bigger debate than it is now, with debaters on both sides holding even more fiercely to their opinions.

The primary objection of stem cell research opponents is that embryonic stem cell research ignores the importance of life. In embryonic stem cell research, an egg is fertilized with the intention of using the stem cells for research. As a result, the embryo dies. Morally, this is a gray area for many opponents, since the embryo is being created only to be harvested and then discarded. They suggest that scientists work more heavily on those therapies since they are already proven to have results.

There are many reasons why this is important and some of them include the country’s culture, history and providence. What used to be Persia, Iran used to be the pinnacle of trade routes that linked the East to the Mediterranean. Although many items were traded in these routes such as salt, pottery and silks, the trades with the most significance was language, philosophy, religion, lifestyle and beliefs. These are intangible goods that are more important than the tangible goods that were routed through the area. There is recent proof that there has been progress made with the health care of expecting mothers and that countries that do not have access to the care that wealthy countries may have are having a big impact on decision makers that are involved with economics. Because, after the press conference in which they confess to the nation their criminal deeds, often without a hint of remorse, these criminals lose a lot. There is a generalization when it comes to a certain group of people and their voting habits. This can be based on religious, social or minority groups. There is a certain logic that tells us that for instance, not all women vote for a democratic politician and neither do all African Americans although many might state that this is true.

Typically, there will be a plethora of studies done on voting habits and especially during the time of major elections. If the predictions of who will vote for which politician come out true, then certain predictions in the future can be warranted as an accurate statement as well. For example, if the majority of African Americans voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 election, does it stand to reason that they will vote for him again? These are the kinds of predictions that are important for political advisers and analysts to rely on.

However, even with the most accurate numbers in a previous election can’t necessarily predict what will happen in a future election since the American public can be fickle or change their minds depending upon an elected official’s habits and reputation. If the public becomes dissatisfied with a contender, chances are that the numbers won’t be the same no matter which demographic group you are studying.

Studying the voting habits of people in American is helpful in predicting the future outcome of an election but it has its faults.

California is one of the states that is most prevalent due to the pensions of past employees. For instance, there are almost 10,000 retirees of a company called CalPERS, which is a company with the largest amount of retirement pensions. This group of people make around $100,000 per year on average as part of their pension plan.

The problem is that states must balance their budgets properly and extra costs come out of taxpayer dollars. This can cause friction between the state workers and the taxpayers. Another state, Utah, has committed to 10% of their state fun for the next 25 years to help offset the stock market crash of 2008. However, it has been difficult to reduce the pensions because of trade unions and these have gone opposed in court.

Since a pension plan is something that is paid in the future; a promise of money after an employee retires from the company, this is a liability that is way off in the future on average. These future monies have to have a value to them and show what the money is worth at today’s rate and then reflected in the future monies. If the discount rates are higher, they are worth less today.

This causes a direct conflict in what the states may have in the future to cover these costs and there doesn’t seem to be a way of fixing things at present.

Now, if you are at this level of wealth, you really have options beyond just poring over your potential investments yourself. While you can certainly find the time to do so, and can definitely justify the time spent in such an endeavor, you can also extricate yourself from such messy details and go on to do more fun things. This paved the way for the American Disabilities Act that also allowed equal hiring practices for the disabled.

With everything the United States has to offer it’s not shocking that people flock to that area. It is the most favored destination in the entire world for people looking to make a quick buck. If one looks at the statistics involving immigration it shows that there is change happening in the demography of the United States. There are approximately almost 29 million immigrants that live in America and form over 10 percent of the entire population.

In a recent survey, people from Mexico are the most immigrants for over 9 million people. The Chinese are in second place with almost 2 million people and then there are the Filipinos and Indians with almost 2 million as well. Out of the sum of the labor force in America, 15% are immigrants. The facts and statistics show that 80% of this work force group fall into the 18 to 64 years age group. This group pays over 160 billion in taxes that fall under federal, state and local.

This shows that while everyone may not like immigration, it is an integral part of our economy.

Another connection between politics and gambling is that owners of gambling concerns are large political contributors. Almost any political fundraiser in the gambling belt will have a significant contribution from the gambling industry – and they, in their turn, would expect the politician involved to pass pro gambling legislature.

After this propaganda got more exposure, it was then put into all forms of media that were possible. Every type of communication was utilized and it was such a success that so many people were killed just on that incorrect information. Even German children expressed the hatred of Jews during that time.

Another successful propaganda campaign was the Indian Revolt that took place in 1857. The media in the United Kingdom stated that British children and women were being sexually assaulted by Indian rebels. This was to gain favor in the public so that they could continue to rule over India. There was hardly any evidence that supported these statements but media control helped the lies gain favor and led to the continued oppression of these people by portraying them as savages and barbaric; needing to be civilized by the colonials in Europe.

While most propaganda can be harmful and false, some can be good by allowing the generation of awareness of a certain issue such as the harmful effects of smoking.

First off, voting allows you to pick the government you want. Even a single vote can make the difference and be the vote that decides a winner so it shouldn’t be underestimated when choosing whether to vote or stay home. Your vote is just as important as anyone’s and you get to decide who will make decisions for your city, state or country.

You are also making an investment in a brighter future. Everything is decided by the people that were voted into office so theoretically you are making the decision on what you want done in your society whether it is at the state level, your hometown council or even the president of the United States.

It is also a privilege that many people risk their lives in other countries to be able to participate in. Many countries are under a certain type of rule that doesn’t allow voting such as a dictatorship in Cuba or a monarchy in England. People under those types of rule do not get a choice in who makes their rules, laws and important decisions.

The only rules are that you have to be 18 or older and a legal citizen to be able to choose your future in the type of city, state or country you want to live in.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing your side of this political debate is that these changes realistically would not effect most of the country. They would, in fact, only change anything for those people who make huge amounts of money. The highest tax brackets in the country would be effected, not those in the middle class or lower. This is a big sticking point for many. In fact, when most people hear about tax hikes and break repeals, they feel like this will directly hurt them. In the overwhelming majority of cases, this is not true.

When it comes to money, there are also harsh divides. When it comes to things like income tax, these divides become even stronger. Arguments happen when taxes are brought up, whether in purely political debates, everyday conversation, or even just offhand comments. It is felt by many that if people fully understood that these changes would not change anything for most of the people in the country, these arguments and debates would not happen as often. Whether or not this is the case, there are always going to be divides in politics. Income tax is just one of the many things argued over.

It is believed that if illegal immigrants went about things the right way by getting their citizenship, not as many people would have adversity to them.

Many struggles have defined communities, the world, and the development of countries. Take the United States, for instance, where slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and women’s rights have all come a long way to where they stand today.

There was once a time when blacks and whites could not go inside the same places. In sports today there is no color barrier, but that was not the case until Jackie Robinson did so in baseball.

Of course most people are aware of the horrors and drawn out affairs that have led to the advances in these and other areas. What does it mean for society today?

However, that is precisely the point. Reading in between the lines in society, much of this is taken for granted. Many of the things that society enjoys are expected.
Many may ask why this is wrong. Should we not expect some of the basic and fundamental rights?

Of course we should. Yet there is a growing tendency for society to neglect the history of politics in order to condemn and ridicule figures, and even politics itself.

As individuals in society grow up with many of these rights and beneficial dynamics within society due to politics, an unhealthy relationship begins to grow in the hearts of many. Politics is irrelevant for some, and the history is under appreciated, or even forgotten.

While of course this is not the case everywhere, it is very real. This is something that undermines the well-being of society’s relationship with politics, where some see it as jostling between politicians, and a place where society can complain about taxes and political figures that are disliked.

But you have to wonder: is this right? Is it right for society at times to forget the distinguished place of politics in society in light of today?

Perhaps society can realize the integrity of politics in controversy from the advances in its past.

Perhaps sports and politics are more clearly aligned and related than casual onlookers can see. Perhaps society should take a lesson here and not disregard the influence of politics in any realm of society.

This dynamic is a key for generations that look forward to maintaining and improving political awareness and activity within a societal context. It is not just a political issue that individuals do not vote or care about politics. It is a social issue, and thus should be treated as such.

Thus as individuals, others should be encouraged in these valuable roles within society as they relate to politics. This is essential in truly allowing politics to maintain an important basis in citizens’ lives, even for those who are not particularly drawn by politics.

Politics is not an individual endeavor. It is one that requires the support of others in society, just as politics itself requires others dedicated to its well-being and in support of figures.

Politics and the history of the country have allowed citizens to enjoy a number of rights. These rights have extended beyond those in other countries, which is unfortunate to them, but also represents the magnitude of rights shared.

With these rights come responsibilities. These civic responsibilities, often referred to as civic duties, are shared by citizens within the country.

These civic duties are integral to the United States government and the political environment. Citizens are urged to understand their civic duties, as the power of the United States rests in its citizens and in this importance.

Civic duties are found in a handful of obligations, generally. The first is perhaps the least favorite of citizens, paying taxes. While this is certainly one that is not popular, it is necessary for the country.

Of one’s civic duties, one often encounter is that of jury duty. As it pertains to some people, it may be contested or received with open arms.

Jury duty is one of many civic duties, such as voting and others. As a jury consists in citizens that meet a few basic criteria, this is a foundation of the judicial system that is very important.

Civil jury duty is contrasted only with grand jury duty. If you are called for jury duty, it will be one of two of these. Note that this can be divided further, such as federal jury duty.

To distinguish the two, it is important to give a brief picture of grand jury duty.

In a grand jury session, there is a list of cases for which bills of indictment are sought. They are usually grouped into jurisdiction: for instance, there will likely be a section for DUIs, drug-related charges, and other types of laws.

Being active in politics is often preached in many contexts. Many taking classes in the history and government in the nation have heard about the seriousness of civic responsibilities.

Such campaigns have also reached the media. For instance, there has been an intense focus on encouraging young voters to be active.

Activity and letting one’s opinions being heard seem to be popular focuses in society. After all, aren’t young people guided towards this realm when these are the focuses on television?

These are not negative focuses, at least in themselves. Individuals need to be aware of the civic duties and vote. Individuals need to take an interest in certain issues and politics, and allow their voice to be heard.

Unfortunately, education seems to get a little bit lost in this picture. This is not to be made in regards to education in this role, but education itself.

Not enough of a focus is put on individuals learning about politics. For instance, when is the last time you heard about how reading the classics in political philosophy is great for being able to act upon such civic duties?

After all they are the basis upon which politics are made. If individuals in society would take some precedence upon learning about the dynamics of politics, in any realm, past or future, perhaps individuals in society would be better informed.

Take seriously the civic duties available. Make some effort to find interest in learning about politics, which will go a long ways to making politics a much better environment.

No matter which way you look at it, it is a difficult question. Media has never really wavered from capturing issues within politics from around the world and within communities, but that certainly does not mean that politics plays an integral role in the average citizen’s normal affairs.

From certain viewpoints politics has seen a rise. Campaigns directed towards young people have ignited, provoking young voters to make use of their right to vote. As a result, young voters have provoked some voting statistics that has improved society, at least in regards to improving society’s use of this important civil right.

Technology is another important positive element within politics. Youtube and Facebook are now integral components of politics, which is certainly something that was not anticipated. This allows for increased visibility, resulting in positive things for the state of politics.

Yet, for some reason, if seems as if politics isn’t capturing the attention of more individuals in society. In terms of voting statistics, there are certainly trends that haven’t established one direction, resulting in peaks and valleys that are based not only on interest in politics, but nevertheless indicative of a certain focus on the subject.

A general feeling of indifference is captured in the attitude of some in society. This is unfortunate and may impede the state of politics for years to come, although it may be argued that this occurs in any subject or entity within society.

There are certainly some positives and negatives in the well-being of politics within society. As there is a number of instances in which the bright hope of politics continues, society must fight against those topics that impede its progress.

In time perhaps politics will be seen more emphatically in the lives of those in society. This, after all, is the goal, allowing everyone to make a difference in something that has altered society completely.

Perhaps by noticing one’s workplace, no matter how obvious or not it may be, can politics become more integrated in the consciousness of society and in people’s interest. After all, one goal of politics in society is to increase attention and interest to create a better environment and society.

Social media websites is perhaps the newest and most notable interaction between technology and politics.

The welcome presence by politics in the midst of these advances is centered on the increased attention received. Politics has an increased presence on the Internet, and thus, in the presence of society.

Perhaps the two largest sites on the Internet for politics, at least in the social networking website discussion, are Youtube and Facebook. Millions of people visit these two websites, of which politics has leveraged.

Youtube hosts videos that people all around the world can upload. Integrated into politics, political figures have used the website in their campaigns, dramatically increasing visibility.

Political figures have likewise done so for Facebook. The interactive social networking website has seen a number of political campaigns attract users based on their use of the very popular website.

The two sites represent two ways in which politics has dramatically altered its visibility. Youtube and Facebook represent two powerhouses on the Internet, which has meant good things for the state of politics, both in a practical and technological sense.

The influence has caught the Internet by storm. No longer is it a novelty item to consider top political figures, campaigns, and other elements of politics online.
It is also not uncommon to find groups on Facebook dedicated to certain political issues. Figures looking towards elections have used Youtube to broadcast videos as well.

The presence of politics on these sites has changed the environment of politics in one certain manner, and that is found in younger individuals. As younger generations are commonly found on social networking websites, young voters and individuals have been a target and a result of the success of politics on such mediums.

Thus politics are attracting young people, which mean good things for the future of politics. Perhaps this trend will continue to inform and allow individuals to get involved that normally wouldn’t that is without such a presence on websites that are visited on a daily basis, for many.

At least, this is the case for many individuals who are unable to make it to the polls. It is also the case for many who generally lack the time to follow and/or stay active in regards to politics, on the local, national, or international level.

Citing general reasons of being too busy, voting statistics at the polls have not been able to discern a noticeable rise or fall in voters. Of course, there are other reasons as well, such as interest in a particular election.

(Mike Murphy, the candidate’s chief consultant, reportedly makes $90,000 per month.) Other opponents accuse Whitman of deciding on a whim to run for office after she left eBay.

But the spending appears to be working, at least during the primary election. Whitman won over her main opponent Steve Poizner who accused Whitman of blatantly buying the election. She’ll be pitted against the Democratic candidate, former California governor Jerry Brown, who is known for his fiscally conservative public and private values. As of July 2010, the two are tied in the race for governor.

And don’t expect to see any third parties having much success at the polls. It’s difficult for them to compete with the highly funded Democratic and Republican parties. Third party candidates have been trying to work their way into the American political scene for years. The most well known are the Independent, Progressive, Libertarian and Green parties. But only two percent of the third party candidates in the past nine years have won their elections.

Some efforts have been made to curb and regulate campaign spending, even as far back as 1867. But the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) of 1972 was the first successful legislation for campaign finance reform. The act outlawed so-called soft money, unregulated contributions from independent entities or those contributions that don’t go directly to the candidates’ campaigns. Senators McCain and Feingold are still, in 2010, trying to get stronger reform laws passed.

One major obstacle to campaign finance reform is some people and organization’s belief that it violates first amendment constitutional rights. In 1976, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment guarantees the right to contribute to and spend money on political campaigns, which comes from American citizens’ right to self-government and to freedom itself.

Some people feel that the limits should be raised since they haven’t been changed for decades. Opponents believe that increasing the spending limits on campaign contributions will allow wealthier people to buy into the elections, financing candidates and propositions that support their causes. Proponents of raising the limits also say candidates could then spend more time on their duties of office rather than fundraising. Opponents counter that throwing more money into the system won’t help with the current problems.

Society is funny that way. Sometimes theories like this hold true. There are situations that can definitely point to the fact that money and power can buy certain advancements or allow for tolerance of certain behaviors that others of us who occupy lower social stratosphere would not be able to obtain.

Money alone has a stronghold over people and is an amazing temptress. People can head straight to the front of a long line and gain instant acceptance with the flash of green. A better table in a restaurant can be bought with money or a famous face or name. People obtain better jobs thanks to who they know or what family they were born into. The higher your rank in society from a multi-generational standpoint, the more clout, pull and influence you likely possess over people.

High society is not easy to gain entrance to. Newcomers aren’t always welcome. No matter how much money you have, some old ranking members are very judgemental when it comes to “new money” and how it was made. High society gives preferential status and treatment to bluebloods and those with lineages hearkening back generations with wealth and power dotting their history.

The United States has always had an energy policy, but when the oil crisis occurred in 1973, having a thoughtful and forward-looking policy on energy and finding new sources became more critical. During the crisis, which resulted in an oil embargo, people lined up at gas stations—some trails of cars stretching on for blocks–to fill their tanks. For perhaps the first time in American history—outside of war times—people were talking about conservation. It was at this time that the Federal Department of Energy was formed. Its mission was to find ways to conserve oil and gas and to promote new energy sources. A nationwide speed limit of 55 miles per hour was established, and the CAFÉ, or Corporate Average Fuel Economy, standards were put into place to reduce automobile size and increase fuel efficiency. Also as a result of the oil crisis, the government required states to establish year-round daylight savings time, and it created the strategic petroleum reserve, the use of which is debated among Congress and the public whenever a national crisis occurs.

The majority of the oil consumed in the United States is in the form of fuel for cars, trucks, trains, airplanes and buses. Biofuel is becoming more popular, and the Senate introduced the Biofuels Security Act in 2006, which would discontinue over time our vehicles that run only on gasoline or diesel and be replaced by vehicles that can run on a variety of fuels. They hoped to have production of current automobiles phased out by 2016, but the legislation was still pending in mid-2010.

Not only the federal government decides energy policy, but state and local governments as well make decisions regarding the production of energy, its distribution and how it will be consumed. The policies can include subsidies and incentives for the public or for business, gas mileage criteria, speed limits and taxes.

The Protocol was introduced at a meeting in Kyoto, Japan in 1997, and by October of 2009, 188 countries had signed the treaty and authorized it through their government structure. The treaty was established in order to slow and stop the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and to halt global warming. The greenhouse gases that were targeted for reduction include carbon dioxide, sulphur hexafluoride, nitrous oxide, methane, perfluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons, which were part of the Montreal Protocol of 1987. The countries are required to record their greenhouse gas emissions, the sources and how they’re dealing with reduction, and then submit the report each year to the United Nations.

In spite of the federal government’s refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, some cities have decided to adopt the Protocol. More than 420 United States cities have incorporated the Kyoto Protocol requirements for greenhouse gas emission reduction into their own laws. The mayor of Seattle, Greg Nickels, spearheaded the effort and was successful in getting many cities to accept the Protocol criteria.

But what is the federal government doing to curb global warming? Many elected officials, as well as citizens, believe that global warming does not exist, or even that it’s a hoax propagated onto the public by liberals. However, since President Barack Obama came into office, he and his administration have said they are committed to finding ways to deal with global warming, or climate change as people are now calling it—a more accurate term since some areas of the earth are experiencing increased cold and rain rather than warming.

Handicapped people who are in a low-income bracket can take advantage of a program offered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This program, part of the National Affordable Housing Act and the American Homeownership and Economic Opportunity Act of 2000, helps create housing for qualified residents. HUD provides funds to non-profit organizations to build, renovate or purchase buildings for the housing of persons with disabilities who have low-incomes. Then, the residents of these structures will receive help with the rent from the government. There are qualifications residents must meet in order to live in the units. First, you must have a physical or mental disability. Second, you must be in a low-income bracket. And third, you or someone in the family must be at least 18 years old.

The government also provides help for persons with disabilities who have previously worked. The assistance is administered through the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. You can qualify for this assistance if you can no longer perform your job and have a disability for at least one year, or if the disability can cause death. You can also get a Compassionate Allowance from Social Security if you have a disease or other medical condition. This allowance can speed up the process and make it easier to get your SSDI.

The first thing is with your car. Doing an auto refinance is a great way to see the expenses go down. In order to do that you need good credit and be in good standing with your existing auto loan. Then a simple online search to comparison shop and you could be well on your way to seeing those monthly payments reduced.

It’s estimated that just in California, the loss of not collecting sales tax on Internet purchases is close to $1 billion. Some states are looking at different ways to approach collecting the taxes. One idea is to decide which of the Internet companies should be forced to charge sales tax. Another is to require the online stores to provide the government with a list of their customers, and then the government would collect the tax from the individual buyers.

Some business organizations are actually supporting the government’s quest to collect online sales tax. These organizations feel it’s unfair that some retailers must charge tax and others aren’t required to. For instance, if a retailer doesn’t have a store in California, it doesn’t have to collect sales tax from its customers. This is the case with the giant online store Amazon.com. The company is based in Washington, so all the business it does in California is not subject to sales tax. This puts smaller retailers, such as local booksellers who sell online and in brick-and-mortar stores, at a disadvantage. Their bottom-line price to customers will be higher than Amazon’s because it must include sales tax.

Colorado is one of those states that has passed legislation that requires out-of-state businesses to inform the state government which people bought online and how much they spent. Then the state will go after the customers to collect the sales tax. The law is being challenged in court based on violation of privacy laws.

The two major parties, Democrats and Republicans, are making greater efforts to get their members to the polls. Volunteers man the phones, calling to remind voters to get to the polls, offering rides to disabled, seniors, and anyone without transportation. Politicians help their party by appearing at local events in support of candidates. Often a certain issue, rather than a candidate, will draw voters to the polls. This has happened in recent elections with hot-topic issues such as gay rights and abortion.

But the Democratic and Republican parties aren’t the only groups that are leading the drive to get out the vote. Rock the Vote is an organization focused on registering young voters between the ages of 18 and 29. In the twenty years of its existence, the group has signed up millions of young people, registering them as both Democrats and Republicans. Indeed, the youth vote helped get Bill Clinton elected in 1992.

Religious groups are also helping to get voters of both parties to the polls. With the close elections in the recent past, religious leaders believe that by rallying their followers, their candidate will get the votes needed to push him or her into office. Because religious, or faith-based, groups can’t directly endorse a candidate, the group leaders use ballot initiatives to inspire people to cast their ballots. Social issues such as gay rights, abortion and Supreme Court appointments can galvanize religious followers on both sides of the issues.

Celebrities are becoming more vocal about their choice of candidate and their support of particular issues. Contrary to popular belief, not all celebrities are liberal, and both Democratic and Republican stars publicly announce their political support, often campaigning for candidates or doing fundraisers for them.

Many of the homeless are veterans, people who have lost their jobs and children who have run from abusive homes. They sleep in parks, under bridges and curled on the sidewalk, tucked into an alcove or store entryway. Children as young as eight are homeless, and often end up in the hands of pimps or drug traffickers.

Many people believe it’s the responsibility of the government to help citizens who are in need, while others feel it’s the homeless person’s responsibility to take care of themselves. The federal government has a history of providing assistance to the homeless. After Reagan’s term ended, more legislation was passed that aimed to address the problem. In 1987, the Stewart B. McKinney Homelessness Assistance Act allocated funds for emergency and permanent housing for homeless people. In 1990, the government committed funds to subsidized housing as well as assistance for tenants. The Low-Income Housing Preservation and Residential Home Ownership Act provided permanent help for low-income housing and assistance for the homeless. And the Quality Housing and Work Responsibility Act of 1998 gave protection to low-income renters.

Probably the most well-known recent Supreme Court nominee rejection is Robert Bork. President Reagan nominated the U.S. Court of Appeals judge who was known for his ultra-conservative opinions. Civil rights groups and other liberals were able block his nomination with a 58-42 vote against Bork. Some people felt he was treated unfairly and Bork himself resigned as a judge after the confirmation hearing.

Reagan then nominated appellate judge Douglas Ginsburg. But during his confirmation hearing, it was revealed that he smoked marijuana and he, too, was rejected. (Reagan’s third choice, Anthony Kennedy, was confirmed.)

Roger Taney was rejected in 1835, but he was nominated again—both times by Andrew Jackson—won confirmation as chief justice and eventually wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision stating that no black person could ever become a citizen of the United States.

The strongest rejection in Supreme Court history was for Alexander Wolcott in 1811. Walcott, a customs inspector, was rejected with a vote of 9-24 because of his embargoes against Great Britain and France.

Even though you won’t see the quick returns that you can get with other investments, you will see growth, which is very important. Stocks can be volatile.  Even with governments bailing out companies, stocks continue to drop in value. You might make a lot of money, or you might lose almost everything you invested. Today’s young voters are getting more involved in politics, not simply casting a ballot. They are joining, and leading, grass-roots efforts for candidates and causes. President Barack Obama owes much of his win to the push by young Americans to see him elected.

President Clinton revved up his campaign and attracted the youth vote when he appeared on MTV and played his saxophone. While in office, he established AmeriCorps, similar to the Peace Corps but focused on the United States. From this, many young people took a renewed interest in helping others and in politics as well.

Younger voters are naturally more optimistic and, having a longer future ahead of them, have more at stake than older Americans. But young adults have many of the same concerns as older voters such as war, jobs and the economy, education opportunities and health care.

The youth vote also is inspiring a new way of campaigning. Young people want to be engaged and demand personal attention. Clinton and Obama are good examples of this when they both sought out the young voters and directly appealed to them for help. The Internet is another way to connect with the younger voters. As more and more young adults use social networking, politicians are also taking advantage of the ease with which they can reach thousands of voters through the Internet.

But the spending appears to be working, at least during the primary election. Whitman won over her main opponent Steve Poizner who accused Whitman of blatantly buying the election. She’ll be pitted against the Democratic candidate, former California governor Jerry Brown, who is known for his fiscally conservative public and private values. As of July 2010, the two are tied in the race for governor.

And don’t expect to see any third parties having much success at the polls. It’s difficult for them to compete with the highly funded Democratic and Republican parties. Third party candidates have been trying to work their way into the American political scene for years. The most well known are the Independent, Progressive, Libertarian and Green parties. But only two percent of the third party candidates in the past nine years have won their elections.

Women fought for the right to vote, believing this would give them more power. In 1850, women held the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York, and 70 years later, in 1920, women were finally granted the right to vote. That right came only 90 years ago, meaning there are some women alive today who were born into an era where the female gender could not vote.

The women’s movement also sought other rights for women such as the right to own property and establish credit in their own name. They also were fighting for the right to run for office—what many saw as the ultimate form of power and the way to win other rights for their gender. In 1922, the first women were elected to office.

Women began demanding more power when the women’s liberation movement came into focus in the 1960s. Two prominent female politicians of the time were Bella Abzug and Shirley Chisholm. Abzug, recognizable in the big hats she liked to wear, worked as a civil rights lawyer and actively worked for peace in Vietnam. She ran for Congress in 1970 and spent six years in the House of Representatives, co-authoring amendments to the Freedom of Information Act and the Right to Privacy Act in 1974.

In 1969, Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman elected to Congress, and worked for civil and women’s rights, helping establish the National Organization for Women. She ran for president in 1972.

1992 showed the biggest turnout of women voters since their right was won in 1920. Approximately 60 million women cast their ballots and five women senators and 24 congresswomen were elected.

Through the years, the laws against marijuana possession have relaxed. Debt consolidation can be a way to lower payments by having one single loan instead of paying many creditors at the same time. These loans can have lower interest rates and can sometimes even lower the total debt that is owed.

Some efforts have been made to curb and regulate campaign spending, even as far back as 1867. But the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) of 1972 was the first successful legislation for campaign finance reform. Part of the act’s provisions required candidates to reveal who contributed to their campaigns and how much they spent. In 1974, the Federal Election Commission Act added to the reform by capping individual donations at $1,000 and Political Action Committee (PAC) donations to $5,000.

The McCain-Feingold reform, officially called the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA) of 2002, is the latest campaign finance law at the federal level. The act outlawed so-called soft money, unregulated contributions from independent entities or those contributions that don’t go directly to the candidates’ campaigns. Senators McCain and Feingold are still, in 2010, trying to get stronger reform laws passed.

One major obstacle to campaign finance reform is some people and organization’s belief that it violates first amendment constitutional rights. In 1976, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment guarantees the right to contribute to and spend money on political campaigns, which comes from American citizens’ right to self-government and to freedom itself.

Some people feel that the limits should be raised since they haven’t been changed for decades. Opponents believe that increasing the spending limits on campaign contributions will allow wealthier people to buy into the elections, financing candidates and propositions that support their causes. Proponents of raising the limits also say candidates could then spend more time on their duties of office rather than fundraising. Opponents counter that throwing more money into the system won’t help with the current problems.

Purchasing a home for the first time is an exciting but nerve-wracking adventure. The Democratic Party was originally known as the Anti-Federalists, which was comprised of craftspeople, laborers and farmers. The Republicans were called the Federalists and the members of that party were typically the citizens who had the most wealth and those involved in commerce such as merchants and manufacturers.

As the parties grew, each one came to represent constituents in specific parts of the country, mainly because of the party’s membership. The Democrats were prominent in the southern and western parts of the United States, those regions that had the highest population of farmers and artisans. The majority of Republicans lived in the East where most of the country’s business dealings took place.

The type and class of people who belong to each party continues to this day, where a large percentage of Democrats are middle class workers. Indeed, the unions are big supporters, both financially and morally, of the Democratic Party and its candidates. And, as in the past, a majority of Republicans are those who hold wealth and are leaders in the business community.

Recently, though, those lines have begun to blur. The Democrats have traditionally been the party of choice for minorities. But many African Americans, as they become wealthier, are joining the Republican Party, as well as educated and wealthy Asians. In addition, the growing population of Hispanics are choosing the Republican party because of its traditional stance against abortion, its religious base and other conservative values.

Today, many people believe that neither party has unique goals. But it appears that the two-party system won’t be changing anytime soon. As long as the majority of Americans follow middle-of-the-road politics and want the same things for themselves and their children, it will be difficult for a new party to find its way into American politics.

Today’s Tea Party also created an acronym for the word Tea: Taxed Enough Already. The seeds of the Tea Party were sewn during Ron Paul’s run for president during the 2008 presidential election. At that time, supporters of the candidate conducted a fund-raiser on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and raised over six million dollars. Then, in January of 2009, a member of FedUpUSA called for a “commemorative tea party” in Boston, and conservative radio talk show host Dave Ramsey, during an appearance on Fox and Friends, brought tea bags with him and said, “It’s time for a tea party.”

The group Young Americans for Liberty is credited with the first modern Tea Party protest. And when Rick Santelli, an editor for CNBC Business News, called for other tea parties, the movement caught fire. Various websites such as ChicagoTeaParty.com and a Facebook page were created around the movement, all calling for more tea party protests.

Other related protests have sprung up as a result of the Tea Party movement. Rush Limbaugh, the controversial ultra-conservative radio talk show host, coined the term “porkulus,” directed at the stimulus package and government spending. In Seattle on President’s Day in 2009, and the day before President Barack Obama signed the stimulus bill, conservative activist Keli Carender held a “Porkulus Protest.” 120 people joined her protest. Later that month, she attracted 1,200 people to a new Tea Party protest.

In 1869, two organizations were formed with the main goal of establishing women’s right to vote. Two well-known characters who played major roles in the early days of the women’s movement, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, established the National Woman Suffrage Association. Their goal was a constitutional amendment that would guarantee women’s voting rights. In the same year, members of the women’s movement, including Lucy Stone and Henry Blackwell, formed the Woman Suffrage Association to achieve women’s right to vote by amending state constitutions. These two organizations later merged into the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA).

Also in 1869, Wyoming (then just a territory) passed the first women’s suffrage law and women were able to serve on juries. Then in 1893, Colorado passed the first state constitutional amendment giving women voting rights. After that, over the next 25 years, 15 more states followed suit.

African-American women began to organize in 1896 when more than 100 black women’s groups came together to form the National Association of Colored Women. Another organization, the National Women’s Trade Union League (WTUL) was formed in 1903 to fight for higher wages and better working conditions for women.

And in 1920, the federal women’s suffrage amendment was passed by both houses of Congress, ready for ratification by the states.

Since it’s implementation, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has been at the center of controversy, and the group Servicemembers Legal Defense Network has reported that discharges of gay and lesbian soldiers have actually gone up instead of down, and that they’re being harassed in certain areas more than ever. In 1999, a private, Barry Winchell, was murdered by fellow unit member Calvin Glover. Glover beat Winchell with a baseball bat until he was dead, and was accused by the prosecution of killing Winchell because he was gay. Glover received a life sentence, although the Army Inspector General said there was no homophobia at the base where Winchell was stationed.

Bill Clinton has since called the policy a failure and has campaigned for openly admitting gays and lesbians into the military. At this writing, President Barack Obama has been reviewing the policy and the Pentagon is in the process of conducting a survey among military personnel. With over 100 questions, the survey will ask soldiers their opinions on repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve in the military.

Most states have laws that allow people to carry concealed handguns. Some even include gun owners’ rights to carry guns into such locales as bars. opponents of these laws believe that carrying guns will increase the chance of injuries due to provoked fights and easy access to the guns.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is the largest and most vocal supporter of United States citizens’ rights to possess guns of all kinds. The NRA believes that the Second Amendment of the constitution gives all Americans this right. They believe that citizens have the right to protect themselves from criminals and that carrying guns will lower the crime rate. Some NRA members also wish to protect themselves from a possible takeover by the government.

The groups Handgun Control and Center to Prevent Handgun Violence are in favor of stronger federal gun control laws. These groups believe that the Second Amendment is not referring to individual citizens but to a militia formed by the government, and that therefore they do not have the right to possess guns. The two handgun control groups also believe that with the increase in personal gun ownership, more deaths and injuries from guns will occur.

The Second Amendment text reads: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Don’t assume that all you a have to do is pick some bonds and you’ll start making money. Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter were unable to do anything about universal coverage because of the bad economy at the time. During the prosperous years of Bill Clinton’s presidency, he was able to tackle the issue and came up with a plan for universal health care. But after a well-planned and funded attack by the plan’s opponents, the bill never made it to Clinton’s desk for signing.

Although these past presidents saw the need for change in how health care was provided, it was not a large issue for the majority of Americans. If you find yourself falling into apathy about an election, look beyond the negative ads, the sound bites and the bickering between pundits. Delve into the issues or the candidates yourself. If you do some research beyond the one-minute blurbs on television, the headlines in the newspaper or the radio talk shows—all of which are usually biased sources—you might find that you’re actually interested in a certain issue or find yourself drawn to a particular candidate. Though news sources like to claim that they provide unbiased reports, they typically have a slant to their articles, whether it’s liberal or conservative. That’s why it’s important to read and listen to a variety of sources. You’ll then be able to make your own informed opinion.

If you’re new to voting, or haven’t been involved in the process for some time, a good place to start building your interest and knowledge is in local politics. At the local level, ballot initiatives and the candidates running for office can have a direct impact on your life. There are any number of issues that lawmakers will vote on while they’re in office, issues that can directly—and sometimes dramatically—affect your lifestyle. New laws could impact your child’s education, the cleanliness of your water, the amount of local taxes you pay or the safety of your bridges and streets. For the next election, try to focus on at least one issue that interests you, and take a closer look at the candidates. You might find that you have a new, or renewed, desire to practice your right to vote.

California law states that the police should “attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States.” But these laws aren’t always strictly enforced, especially where the employer is concerned.

The current Arizona law is the toughest legislation on record. President Barack Obama has spoken out against it and, as of this writing, the U.S. Department of Justice is suing the Arizona government in order to halt the law from going into effect. The Obama administration believes the law is unconstitutional, but not because of the possible racial profiling. They are attacking it from a different angle—that the Arizona law interferes with the federal government’s foreign policy in regards to immigration, and this interference is against the U.S. constitution. In the lawsuit, the Justice Department states that “In our constitutional system, the power to regulate immigration is exclusively vested in the federal government.” Arizona counters that the federal government is lax on securing the country’s borders and that the Arizona law complements rather than conflicts with the federal immigration laws.
