Before a law becomes a law it must first pass through a number of processes and procedures before it can be voted on and made a law. One of the first steps involved in making an idea a law is to make it a Senate Bill. The Senate a part of the legislative branch of the United States government and is one half of the decision making process on what can pass on to be a law. If you have an interest in a bill that is in the Senate you can track its progress to see where the Senators stand on the issue. Here is a look at what you need to do to track the progress of the bill.
Find the Bill Number. Every bill that is in the Senate has an identifying number. This number is important as it will allow you to track the bill no matter where it is in the Senate. Bill numbers can be found through the Library of Congress System known as Thomas.
Find the Committee for the Bill. Every bill will be given to a Senate Committee. This committee is responsible for the bill and deciding if it should be considered for voting or not. If you are looking to track a bill you will need to know what committee it was assigned to so you can follow up on the status of the bill. Many bills will die in committee and this is as far as the bill will go in the Senate.
Check the Senate Schedule. When a bill passes out of committee it will be put on a Senate schedule so that it can be voted on. Senate schedules are made a week to two in advance. If you know your bill is going to be voted on you can find out where it is on the schedule so that you can follow the discussion and voting process for the bill.
